How to set up and use Universal Serial Bus (USB) Printing on a Macintosh


The Steps:

  1. Install the software
  2. Install the PostScript Printer Description Files (PPDs) onto the Macintosh
  3. Connect the cable - (The MAC can remain powered on but the printer should be power off connecting the cable)
  4. After connecting the cable power on the printer
  5. Setting up your printer using the desktop printer utility
  6. Launch the Desktop Printer Utility application located in the Apple LaserWriter Software folder in the Apple Extras folder on the hard drive
  7. Select Printer (USB) as the desired printing connection and the LaserWriter 8 driver (must be version 865 or later)
  8. Click the OK button to continue
  9. Under USB Printer Selection, click the printer icon. This will display the printers that are currently connected to your USB bus.
  10. Click the desired HP LaserJet printer to highlight it and then click the OK button
  11. Under PostScript Printer Description (PPD) File, click the Auto
  12. Setup button to configure and select the appropriate PPD file. (If the Auto Setup fails, you will be prompted to manually select a PPD Manually selecting a PPD does not mean that print jobs will fail Choose the PPD that corresponds to your HP LaserJet printer)
  13. Click the Create button and type a name for your HP LaserJet's Desktop Printer icon. A Desktop Printer icon should now appear on your Desktop (A good naming scheme is Last Name-department-type of printer) Example: Jarvis-Biology-HP 4plus
  14. Select Quit from the File menu You are now ready to print to your HP LaserJet printer using Desktop Printing. Make Sure you have the correct printer set as default by going to check this.
  15. Go to FILE then select PRINT DESKTOP-
