Win95/98 Shutdown Problems
- No shutdown sound event.
- If IE 4.01 is installed on machine with the desktop update, upgrade IE. (Problems occur with this release of IE and having one or more mapped network drives.)

- Remove items from startup folder.
- right-click the Start button, go to open -> programs -> startup
- remove everything, unless there's something critical
- Change the disable fast shut down box (Win 98 only)
- Rem out load= and run= statements in WIN.INI
- ** For advanced users only!
- Rename CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files
- start -> find -> files or folders, for "named" type "config.sys"
- right-click each file it finds and rename them to "config.old"
- repeat for autoexec.bat
- restart
- In device manager, go to system devices and then advanced power management. Click on settings tab and uncheck enable power management (not all computers)
- start -> settings -> control panel -> system -> device manager
- Click on power icon in control panel and set power management to off.
- start -> settings -> control panel -> power management
- look for "turn monitor off" and "turn hard disks off"
- set both to "never"
- On the Device Manager tab, click System Devices. Double-click PCI Bus, click to clear the Use IRQ Steering check box on the IRQ Steering tab.
- start -> settings -> contol panel -> system
- On the Device Manager tab, select System Devices. Select Plug and Play BIOS, and then click to select the Disable NVRAM / ESCD updates check box on the Settings tab.
- start -> settings -> control panel -> system
- If you have an anti-virus program that is configured to scan your floppy disk drive when you shut down your computer, your computer may stop responding
- Some shutdown-related issues may be solved by disabling the "Resume by Ring and LAN" feature in the BIOS.
