Windows95 Winsock Files

c:\windows\winsock.dll This is the file that file that windows uses to look up network socket information. Win95 Dial-Up Networking uses the standard windows winsock file, but some other services (i.e. AOL) use their own winsock files. These other winsock files can sometimes interfere with windows networking. 42 kb

Windows 95 Version Information
There are three different versions of Windows 95 avaliable, and each version is unique and not interchangable with the others. Before installing components from a Windows CD, be sure to check the version of the CD versus the version installed to eliminate possible problems.

To check your version of Windows:

  1. Right-click on the My Computer icon
  2. Select Properties
  3. Look for the version under the General tab
Avaliable versions of Windows 95
4.00.950 or 4.00.950a This is the original version (and OSR1). The CD will have a copyright date of (c)1981-1995.
4.00.950B This is known as the "B" version of Windows 95, OSR2. A "B" version CD can be distinguished by a copyright date of (c)1981-1997
4.00.950C This is the newest release of Windows 95, OSR2.5. On the CD label it will say, "Windows 95 with USB support"
 

Installing/Reinstalling Components in Windows 95
Follow these instructions to install or reinstall any component that is normally installed durring windows setup (i.e. Communications, Accessories, Multimedia, etc.):

  1. Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel
  2. Double click on the Add/Remove Programs icon
  3. Select the Windows Setup tab
  4. If you are installing a new component skip to step 6, otherwise remove the check mark from next to the component you wish to reinstall.
  5. Click the Apply button
  6. Put the check mark back next to the component you just uninstalled, or wish to install. You may click on the Detailsbutton to select individual components
  7. Insert the Windows 95 CD-ROM (Make sure it is the correct version)
  8. Click OK
  9. Reboot your computer to allow the changes to take place
NOTE: If you were installing/reinstalling communications you may also need to follow these additional steps to place the appropriate network protocols (i.e. TCP/IP) in the Network control panel
  1. Open your Control Panel
  2. Double-click on the Network icon
  3. If a required protocol is not listed, click the Add button
  4. Select Protocols
  5. Choose the appropriate protocol to install (for the standard TCP/IP, NetBEUI, or IPX/SPX protocols that come with Windows 95 select Microsoft as the manufacturer, and then choose the desired protocol from the list)
  6. Click OK
  7. Insert the Windows 95 CD-ROM (Make sure it is the correct version)
  8. Click OK to close the network control panel
  9. Reboot your computer
