Course Content:  MATH 231 and MATH 232 form a sequence that combines first-semester calculus with algebra and trigonometry. The sequence is designed for students whose pre-calculus skills are not strong enough for MATH 235. Calculus material in MATH 231 includes limits and derivatives of algebraic functions and their applications.

Prerequisites:
Sufficient score on the Mathematics Placement Exam. Note: MATH 231-232 together are equivalent to MATH 235 for all prerequisites. Not open to students who have already earned credit in MATH 235.

Required Text:
Calculus I with Integrated Precalculus. by Laura Taalman (ISBN-13# 978-1-4641-3713-6),

Participation and Attendance:  Attendance will not be recorded but lecture and discussion attendance and participation are both expected and highly recommended. Quizzes will be given at the beginning of class on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Grading:
The course grade is based on the top 10 of 11 quizzes, the top 9 of 10 homework quizzes, the top 2 of 3 Midterms, and a Final.

                  Quizzes         20%
                  Homework Quizzes   20%
                  Top Midterm 1     20%
                  Top Midterm 2     20%
                  Final             20%

The midterms will not be cumulative in the strict sense of the word.  However, it will be necessary to know previous material.  The dates and times of the Midterms are listed in at http://educ.jmu.edu/strawbem/Syllabus_math_231_F12.html.  Roughly, Midterm 1 will cover Chapter 0, Midterm 2 will cover Chapter 1, Midterm 3 will cover Chapter 2. The Final will be cumulative and will cover Chapters 0-4.  The date, time, and place of the Final is fixed by the Registrar's Office.

Homework Quizzes:  Homework will be assigned weekly on Friday and there will be a quiz at the beginning of class on the following Friday.  There will be a total of 10 homework quizzes and the lowest score will be dropped.  The list of problems can be found at
http://educ.jmu.edu/~strawbem/TakeHome_math_231.html.

Quizzes:  Quizzes will be given at the beginning of class on each Tuesday.  There will be a total of 11 in-class quizzes and the lowest score will be dropped.  Quiz solutions will be available online at http://educ.jmu.edu/~strawbem/InClass_math_231.html.

Exam Policies:  All exams are closed book and close notes.  No calculators or electronic devices are allowed.  Cell phones may not be used as calculators or clocks.

Policies for Missed Exams or Quizzes:   It is the student's responsibility to notify the instructor prior to the exam/quiz date if there is a conflict.  Because the lowest scores are dropped there will be NO late exams/quizzes allowed.  If a student misses a quiz or midterm for any reason, then that quiz or exam with be taken as the grade to be dropped.  The Final cannot be missed.

Electronic Devices:  Please make certain that all cell phones and pagers are TURNED OFF before lecture begins.  Cell phones and pagers are disruptive to the whole class.

Disability Accommodations (taken exactly from the JMU webpage):  JMU abides by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act, which mandate reasonable accommodations be provided for students with documented disabilities. If you have not already done so, you will need to register with the Office of Disability Services, the designated office on campus to provide services for students with disabilities. The office is located in Wilson Hall, Room 107 and you may call (540) 568-6705 for more information.

If you have a disability and may require some type of instructional and/or examination accommodations, please contact your instructor early in the semester so that he/she can provide or facilitate provision of accommodations you may need.

Religious Accommodations (taken exactly from the JMU webpage):  All faculty are required to give reasonable and appropriate accommodations to students requesting them on grounds of religious observation. The faculty member determines what accommodations are appropriate for his/her course. Students should notify the faculty by no later than the end of the Drop-Add period the first week of the semester of potential scheduled absences and deterĀmine with the instructor if mutually acceptable alternative methods exist for completing the missed classroom time, lab or activity. Contact the Office of Equal Opportunity at (540) 568-6991 if you have additional questions.

Inclement Weather:  James Madison University is primarily a self-contained campus with a large number of residential students requiring a variety of support services, regardless of inclement weather conditions or emergency situations. For the safety and well-being of its students and employees, the university may close or limit its services based on inclement weather or other emergencies.
