In another arginine study the method of protein
synthesis that arginine is useful in activating is the mTOR pathway.
Researchers from the U.S. Dept of Argriculture found that arginine
promotes muscle protein synthesis by stimulating the mTOR pathway rather
than via nitric oxide production. (American Journal of
Physiology-Endocrinology Metabolism, 299: 899-909, 2010).
This study showed that influencing biochemical pathways that
promote protein synthesis is more important than stimulating muscle
blood flow for muscle growth.

From McMasters University, research showed that Arginine supplementation
affected neither muscle blood flow nor muscle hypertrophy. Test subjects
ingested a drink containing essential amino acids (including 10 grams of
L-arginine) or a placebo. Eventhough the supplement increased blood
arginine levels by 300 percent, they found no changes in markers of
nitric oxide production (important controller of blood flow) or muscle
protein synthesis. However, arginine increased growth hormone levels
