Alternative Assessment

In January 2013, four Silver12 dots (myself, Jane Butterfield (University of Minnesota/UMPTYMP), Robert Campbell, III (College of St Benedict/St John's University), and John Peter (Utica College)) moderated a panel on Alternative Assessment Techniques for Project NExT Fellows at the Joint Meetings in San Diego.  Here are the slides presented by our four panelists.

Bonnie Gold: Summative Assessment Techniques

TJ Hitchman: Standards-Based Grading

Dana Ernst: Using IBL as Assessment

Victor Odafe: Assessing with Voice

Inspired by the ideas given in this panel, the original group of organizers, joined by fifth Silver12 dot David Clark (
University of Minnesota/UMPTYMP), ran a MAA contributed paper session at the 2014 Joint Meetings in Baltimore.  It was a great success, with many great ideas and experiences shared.  Using the links below, you can find the schedule with speakers, titles, and links to abstracts from the JMM website.

Session 2
Session 3

We also had a large session at the JMM in 2016!  You can find the schedule using these links:

We've now combined forces with a group of Gold14 dots who have an interest in Formative Assessment (and Standards Based Grading in general).  Our newly formed FAAT (Formative and Alternative Assessment Team) has some great plans in the works, so watch for exciting events at MathFest 2017!
