- Re-read Emery Lesson 12 and attempt to diagram the following sentences:
- The hunters had to be very quiet. (Infinitive as part of a verb phrase - with the phrasal auxiliary "have to")
- They prefer their fish to be raw and very fresh. (direct object infinitive phrase that has a subject.)
- For that soup to be perfect would require some fresh herbs. (Infinitival subject- infinitive phrase has a subject and is introduced by the subordinate conjunction "for" -- note that this sentence may sound awkward to you.)
- It would be nice for everyone to sing with us at the end of the song. (another infinitival subject, but one that is moved to the end and a "filler-it" is used as a placeholder -- note that this sentence may sound more natural than the previous sentence.)
- The team should let him have another chance. (an infinitival direct object, but this time there is no "to" though the infinitive phrase does have a subject...
