Survey of English Literature I - Assignment 7 (REQUIRED)
James Madison University
|
Instructions: This assignment can be hand-written as long as it's legible and on a full-size sheet of paper. It will be graded only as an acceptable or unacceptable effort. It is, however, REQUIRED. In other words, it can't be the one you skip without penalty, and your paper due 9/25 will not be accepted if you have not submitted this assignment in advance and had it approved. (To get credit for the assignment, you must submit this by the due date, 9/16. If you don't make that assignment deadline but want to be able to submit a paper, you must still turn this assignment in absolutely no later than Monday, 9/21.)
- State either which of the proposed topics you have chosen or what alternative topic has been pre-approved for you by me.
- Write a short (at least a sentence or two) preliminary thesis statement for your first paper. This statement needs to be more than just a general topic or a description of what text you think you might use or of what interests you. Even if you aren't very sure what you want your thesis to be, give a first draft here of something that /might/ be a thesis. (Remember, though you cannot change your general topic, your final thesis does not have to be the same as this first attempt. In fact, your wording, at least, is quite likely to get edited as you continue working on your paper.)
- Provide just one or two specific, exact quotes from a work we've read that you expect to use to support your thesis (other than any quote already given in a topic description). (At least one quote from this assignment will have to be among the quotes you use in your actual paper. Remember to resubmit this assignment with your paper and to underline a quote from this assignment in the paper.)
