  1. Suppose you are trying to leave for an appointment and you ask your three roommates, "Have you seen my car keys?" and each roommate gives you one of the responses below. For each response, state which Gricean maxim that roommate is violating and explain why his/her response violates that maxim.

  2. After (re)reading Chapter 5, attempt to answer each of the following questions about the word "pen":
    1. Does "pen" have an antonym? If so, what is it, and what type of antonymy of those mentioned in the text best fits this pair? If not, why do you think we don't have such a word?
    2. Give an example of a meronym of "pen".
    3. Give one example each of a hyponym and a hyperonym of "pen". Are your hyponym and hyperonym in the same taxonomy?
    4. What is the word that you think comes closest to being a synonym of "pen." Describe this synonymy. For example, is it a perfect synonym? A sense synonym? Perhaps a synonym restricted by connotation or register?
