  1. Do Exercises 1 (A & B) and 2 (a-l) on page 210-211 in your text.
  2. Do Exercise 13 (a-h) on page 215 in your text.
  3. For a short paragraph of your choice, attempt to write a syntactic paraphrase of each sentence. Next, attempt, return to your original paragraph and attempt to give a lexical paraphrase of at least one word or phrase in each sentence. Turn in the original paragraph and your two revised versions. Did you find any sentences that were problematic for syntactic paraphrase? For lexical paraphrase?
  4. For each of the pairs of sentences below, explain why the first entails the second and state whether it is an example of structural entailment or of semantic entailment.
    1. John voted for George W. Bush. --> John voted for a republican.
    2. Arthur and Fanny each weigh over 300 lbs. --> Arthur and Fanny are fat.
    3. The cow jumped over the moon. --> The cow jumped.
    4. A ghost stole my homework. --> Something stole my homework.
  5. For each sentence below, write down a presupposition made in that sentence:
    1. Our new robot is acting strange.
    2. Valerie regretted not receiving a Corvette for her birthday.
    3. The professor forgot that her students are brilliant.
    4. Please take me out to the ball game again.
    5. Why don't pigs have wings?
