LLAMA Syntax
Linguistics Labs and Multimedia Activities

System Requirements

The software developed for the Llama Project requires the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) v1.7 or higher. It is freely available at www.java.com.

Most people already have the JRE installed on their computers. You can ensure that you have the required version installed online

Please note that, though Java applets (i.e., Java programs that run inside of a WWW browser) have had some security problems in the past, the software developed for the LLAMA Project does not run inside of a browser. Hence, even if you have disabled Java in your browser you can still download, install, and run LLAMA applications.

Automated Installation

  1. Logon to your computer using an account that has installation privileges. (If you do not or can not, you will not be able to install LLAMA Syntax in a system folder/directory like "Program Files" and will have to install it in a folder/directory of yours.)
  2. Ensure that you hava Java installed on your computer (see the discussion of System Requirements).
  3. Download the installer.
  4. Execute the installer (e.g., by double-clicking on the icon).
  5. Follow the instructions provided to you by the installer.

Unfortunately, by default, OS X does not use the Llama Syntax icon. To change the icon, download the Llama Syntax OS X icon to the same folder you used for Llama Syntax. Then:

  1. Use the Finder to find the file named LlamaSyntax.jar
  2. Right-click on LlamaSyntax.jar
  3. Pull down to "Get Info".
  4. Drag LlamaSyntax.icns onto the small icon at the top left of the information window.

Manual Installation (Easy)

You may install Llama Syntax manually if the automated installation does not work for some reason.

  1. Download LlamaSyntax.jar to your desktop.

You can now execute Llama Syntax (e.g., by double-clicking on the icon). Note that, by default, the Llama Syntax icon will not be used and that some configuration files will also be saved on your desktop.

Manual Installation (Advanced)

If you do not want to install Llama Syntax on your desktop, you can maintain more control of the installation process.

  1. Create an installation folder/directory for Llama Syntax.
  2. Download LlamaSyntax.jar to that folder/directory.
  3. Download either the MS Windows icon, OS X icon, or the Linux icon as appropriate. (In most browsers and operating systems, just right-click on the appropriate link.)
  4. Create a shortcut/alias to LlamaSyntax.jar and place it on your desktop.
    • MS Windows: Right-click on LlamaSyntax.jar and pull down to "Create Shortcut". After it is created, cut the shortcut and paste it on the desktop.
    • OS X: Right-click on LlamaSyntax.jar and pull down to "Make Alias". After it is created, cut the alias and paste in on the desktop.
  5. Change the icon used by the shortcut/alias.
    • MS Windows: Right-click on the shortcut and pull down to "Properties". Then, click on "Change Icon..." and navigate to the icon you just downloaded.
    • OS X: Right-click on the shortcut and pull down to "Get Info". Then drag LlamaSyntax.icns onto the small icon at the top left of the information window.
