Unix

WHAT IS UNIX?

Unix is an operating system that was developed at Bell Labs during the 1970's. It is a multitasking, multiuser operating system; this means that many people can be logged into the same machine and do many different things at the same time.

The philosophy of Unix is "Do one thing and do it well." One result of this philosophy, by hook or crook, is that Unix commands are very task oriented, powerful, and occasionally obscure.
