Declaration of Major

SMAD Application Procedure

To effectively manage enrollment, the School of Media Arts & Design adopted the following application process effective Feb. 12, 1999.

Special Admission Requirements:

The School of Media Arts and Design reviews applications for admission to the major each academic year in the spring semester. The application due date is Friday, February 18, 2000. All students interested in majoring in the programs offered by the School must apply for a limited number of spaces in the major. An Admissions Committee in the School reviews applications and offers admission based on availability to the most qualified students.

Students interested in declaring a major in the School of Media Arts and Design must declare PRE-SMAD as a major prior to being eligible to enroll in SMAD 101. Any student may declare a PRE-SMAD major. Declaring PRE-SMAD does not guarantee that the student will be accepted into the SMAD major. As PRE-SMAD, students may take SMAD 101 followed by SMAD 201, but are restricted from other SMAD courses until accepted into the major.

During the semester in which students are enrolled in SMAD 101, they may apply for admission to the major. A complete application to the major includes the following:

	(1) Completion of SMAD 101 or enrollment in SMAD 101;
	(2) Completion of the SMAD Competency Test with sections on:*
		a. English grammar
		b. English usage
		c. a timed writing sample
		d. basic computer knowledge and
		e. basic multimedia design concepts;
		* (Instructions for SMAD Competency Test available in
                    SMAD 101);
	(3) A completed change of major form (available in the SMAD
            office);
	(4) A completed SMAD major card (available in the SMAD office);
        (5) A completed SMAD Questionnaire (available in the SMAD office)
            and relevant supporting documents.

The student will present the above information in a manila folder (supplied by the student) to the main SMAD office with the student's last name, first name, and student identification number on the tab of the folder.

Following the review by the Admissions Committee, students will be notified about their acceptance into the major on Friday, March 3, 2000. If accepted, students will be eligible to register for SMAD courses. Students not accepted into the major will be notified and may reapply in the following year.

Change of Concentration:
Students accepted into the major must pick a concentration and focus area. Students who wish to change concentrations and/or focus areas after being accepted into the major may do so only during the annual application time period. A student will be permitted to change concentrations and/or focus areas with the approval of the admissions committee.

Minors in SMAD
At this time, the school is not accepting applications for any of its minor programs including Advertising. Current students with a declared minor in SMAD or Advertising are not affected by this policy.

STEP Test Required
The SMAD STEP test has to be taken and passed by all students who are enrolled in either SMAD 210, SMAD 231,SMAD 250, and SMAD 220. Ideally, the test should be successfully completed before enrolling in the course. However, if a student is enrolled in one of the three courses and hasn't taken the test or successfully passed the test, she/he must do so as soon as possible. Instructions for taking the test are available in AS-11. A student who is enrolled in a course and scores 55-59% on the test may stay enrolled in the course until the mid-term drop date. If the student has not passed the test by that date, the student must drop the course to avoid failure. A student who is currently enrolled in one of the three courses and has scored 54% and below has until the first Friday of classes to either increase his/her score or drop the course.
