madiSTEM (formerly the Expanding Your Horizons Conference at JMU)
, Director (2010-2022), Consultant (2022-present)
An annual one-day STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) conference designed for girls in grades 6-8. The day includes hands-on workshops, keynote addresses, and a lunch with JMU STEM majors. The conference was renamed madiSTEM: Making a Difference in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in 2021-2022.
-
A weeklong day camp for girls who had completed grades 5-7 that was hosted by the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) at the University of Minnesota. The girls participated in problem sessions and
competitions, played mathematical games, and created a poster on an advanced mathematical topic. In my role as co-organizer, I set the schedule for the week, combined existing materials with new ideas to develop the curriculum,
trained the undergraduate and graduate students who worked as mentors, and led sessions on divisibility.
