clarence morgan: notes and ideas

august 16 - september 24.

Clarence Morgan is an artist who also writes. He has an affinity for the medium of words, and putting them down on paper stimulates his appetite for further expression in paint and printer's ink.

Like language, Morgan's visual expressions are abstract. His paintings are built up of impasto deposits of acrylic paint applied with squeegee and palette knife to canvas or paper. Pattern, applied with stencils or painted freehand, is central to his work.

The artist prevents overlapping layers of patterns and color from falling into lively confusion by employing the underlying structure of a compositional grid. Morgan's paintings have been remarked upon for the thick, almost three-dimensional quality of their built-up paint layers.

Without the physical dimension, his prints rely on elegance of line and the translucent glow of color inks on paper.
