The goal of SUMS travel support is to make the conference accessible to as many members of the mathematical community as possible. To facilitate this goal, we award travel funds on a semi-rolling basis. Your chances of funding go up if you apply sooner rather than later.  To maximize the number of people we can support, we ask that you also request funds from your home institution or program and, if applicable, the program or institution where you did your research. We have found that most schools are willing to help their students attend conferences of this type, and that small awards from several sources are a good way to optimize an individual's funds.

Participants travelling from out of town are strongly encouraged to make plans well in advance of the conference.  We cannot make your arrangements for you.  The Local Information page of the site has information about lodging, directions, airports, etc.

In order to distribute our limited travel funds fairly  and to maximize opportunities to attend the conference, we have adopted the following funding parameters: If your only expense is gas, we may be able to provide modest reimbursement.  For those who need to stay in a hotel, we may be able to cover hotel costs up front for either or both of Friday and Saturday nights, depending on how far you have to travel, with double occupancy (we will assign you a roommate). In special circumstances we may be able to provide other support (e.g. partial airfare reimbursement, high school groups).

To  apply for funds, please  send  an e-mail to: SUMS at math dot jmu dot edu, with the phrase "travel application" in the subject line. In the body of the mail, please list the following:

1. Your name
2. Your e-mail address
3. Your status (undergraduate, high school faculty, etc)
If you are a student, please include the name and e-mail of a faculty mentor who is willing to help you plan your trip.
4. Whether or not you are contributing a talk.
5. Whether or not you are contributing a poster.
6. Where you are travelling from.
7. Your approximate round-trip distance.
 8. Please briefly describe the funding that you need.  We will do our best to accomodate you. If you are asking for more than $50, please describe your efforts to secure other funding.

Thank you for your application. We will write back as soon as possible, within a week.
