"This young woman [above] is being dragged away to the manor house to provide the landlord with her milk, forced to leave her new baby to starve to death.  In that man-eating society, what family among the laboring millions did not have a story of blood and tears, a deep hatred of class oppression?"
 
 

Peasants with newborns were often chosen to breast feed the infants of the landlord's family, so that elite women would not have to do so.  Here again the theme is on the breakup of the peasant family.  It is ironic that the family represents such an important theme in this exhibition since during the Cultural Revolution the family unit was again under attack, only now by Mao's Red Guards.
