Initializing a Floppy Disk

When you insert a brand new unformatted disk into a Mac, the Mac prompts you to initialize it. Initializing (also called formatting) prepares a new disk to store information. If a disk already contains information, you can choose to reformat at any time b y choosing Erase Disk fromt he Special menu.

Formatting or initializing a disk always erases any information on it.
