  USAID/DEC Communications
 
  The Development Experience Clearinghouse (DEC) is the largest online resource for USAID funded, international development documentation.

After creating a KM/Communications strategy to form a core USAID audience, I created and oversaw the development of Knowledge Management tools used in its implementation: DEC Express

  • The rebuilding of the public Web site for an 800% increase in popularity.

  • The rebuilding of the listserve, DEC Express, for an increase of 4,000 subscribers.

  • The creation of the DEXS (document) Search Bar especially designed for USAID contractors.

I created and managed the development of USAID's first online 'community of practice' web site for the Muslim World Initiative (MWI) group. The MWI is an USG, interagency initiative formed to create a development and foreign policy approach to countries with significant Muslim populations.

    I implemented a communications strategy to meet the needs of EQUIP's sixteen partner organizations covering multiple projects and award activities:

    EQUIP is a combination of programs, processes, and activities that contribute to USAID/EGAT/ED goals of improving educational quality through classrooms, schools, and community (EQUIP1); policy, systems, and management (EQUIP2); and learning & earning for out-of-school youth (EQUIP3).

    I created and managed the development of three, password-protected, online communities of practice (EQUIP1, EQUIP2, EQUIP3) that include:

  • Document templates
  • Online Document Submission Form
  • Threaded Discussion Areas

    Video

    Using a Development Communications Support strategy, I initiated and coordinated with NGO leaders in the towns of Ciudad Guzman and Morelia, Mexico, the video productions of two development issues. I worked with and trained local volunteers in conducting interviews and video production activities. My roles included fundraiser, writer, camera, senior editor, director, and producer of these videos.

      STREET VENDORS: THE INFORMAL MAJORITY OF   MEXICO (24 min., Spanish & English)

      This video explores the human side of informal economics as illustrated by Dr. Emilio Cobos and five street vendors in and around Morelia, Mexico. Assistance was provided by the social work NGO, G.E.T.S., of Morelia. The video has been shown on Mexican and American television, presented at the San Antonio CineFestival, and is distributed by The Cinema Guild Inc.. Purchasers include over 30 universities and colleges.

       PROYECTO ZAPOTLAN  (11 min., English Dub)

      This video demonstrates the use of a Development Support Communication (DSC) strategy when revealing the communication problems within Proyecto Zapotlan, a community health NGO in Ciudad Guzman, Mexico. The video was used to amend the problems by the Director, Dr. J.R. Toledo (University of North Texas), and is used as an academic tool for the University of Iowa's Program for Third World Development Support.

      This article, The Informal Economy in a Post-Capitalistic Society: The Mexican Experience was written as part of my research for the video that I produced entitled; Street Vendors - The Informal Majority of Mexico.
