Carving DragonHart: A few things about taking the carved top from rough contour to finish. Enjoy using palm planes, violin planes, gouges, carving knives, needle files, scrapers and sandpaper. Not shown here is a practice DragonHart carving, a.k.a. "PracticeHart" Practice on wood you don't care much about first!
The first wave of carving away everthing between contour lines has begun. Violin plane shown here, but be sure to see how palm plan and larger violin planes can find an arc on the piece.

Most of this top carved to approximate contour. Time to begin work around the relief carving and bring depth to DragonHart.
Carving the plane where the fingerboard will ride on the top. Palm plane shown.
Checking the thickness of the top at bridge position. Use scrap fingerboard, straightedge and bridge hardware (Schaller Roller Bridge). After this thickness is decided, you can go on to finishing the rest of the contours and the relief. I worked between the contour and the carving, back and forth, gently approximating into the current image.
Meet DragonHart. Ready to move on to finishing the upper bout.
