Designing DragonHart: A few notes below on contour mapping and mapping transfer. Or, in other words, figuring out how thick to make the top and placing DragonHart on it.
DragonHart's most current design. Parchment paper, from the kitchen supplies, is a pretty decent tracing paper, about 16 inches wide. The generic design with contours is first transferred to the parchment paper. On the parchment, we can lay out dragon carving, sound holes and anything else for this specific instrument. From the parchment paper, carbon paper is used to transfer the design to the wood. Parchment

paper erases well, but is a little more difficult to mark in fine detail and does not stick well to masking tape.
DragonHart is transferred to the sound board from the parchment paper with carbon paper. This poplar was taken from Chuck's front yard in January 2006. It has been air dried in his old hay barn in a two inch thick beam. To see how the two halves are joined click here.
On the master design, the center line cross section is drawn alongside the top view to determine thickness along the center line. These depths later mapped to the sound board for thicknessing.
Poplar beams custom milled for maximum vertical grain To see millwork click here. From the master design, this single tree trunk can provide any number of DragonHarts or carved top guitars of other design. If I can draw it, I can probably carve it. What would you design?
