DragonHart Origins: Milling the Tulip Poplar

DragonHart's origins include this milling of a large tulip poplar tree. Spring 2006.
You need a guy like Doug Hulver who can roll into your yard with a Deluxe Wood Mizer and he knows what to do with it. It's a giant bandsaw with a track that carries it through the length of a log. It takes some careful work to get to the large square timber you see on his machine in this photo. Once he has it squared, he can roll this around like a little baby for custom cutting. For me that means maximum vertical grain. The Wood Mizer cuts up to about 21 inches wide. That's a challenge for a 48" diameter trunk.

The machine includes hydraulic lifts to help with loading and unloading the cutting bed.
Tulip poplar reveals some incredible purple and green colors when fresh cut. Within hours it will begin to oxidize and turn to a more golden brown as found in DragonHart.
About half the tree yield in this load. Ten and 21 inch beams. Lots of vertical grain and clear stock.
